Sinopse: Cada temporada da série mostra os eventos de um período de 24 horas na vida do agente Jack Bauer, interpretado pelo actor Kiefer Sutherland, onde ele, como membro da CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit, ou Unidade Contra-Terrorista) ou ajudado por ela, deve evitar algum atentado terrorista contra os Estados Unidos, além de prestar protecção de algum modo aos integrantes do alto escalão do governo norte-americano. A série igualmente enfatiza as actividades dos agentes da CTU, as acções dos terroristas e as reacções do governo federal. Entretanto, na 7ª Temporada, a série sofre algumas mudanças e a CTU sai de cena para dar lugar ao FBI, com novas ramificações ao enredo.
